The San Bernardino Valley College men's cross country team picked up the pace on the back half of the Woodward Park course to take sixth place as a team at the California Community College Athletic Association Championships.
The Wolverines finished with 182 points, tied for sixth with Clovis, but the Wolverines won the tiebreaker on head-to-head results. SBVC finished six points behind fifth-place Cerritos and eight points behind fourth-place LA Harbor, with third-place Riverside City only 28 points out of reach. Cuyamaca won the team competition.
Individually, all seven of SBVC's runners posted personal records at the 4-mile distance. Micah Watson (Fontana) concluded his stellar freshman season by finishing the course ninth overall with a time of 20 minutes, 28.6 seconds - the eighth fastest time posted by an SBVC runner on the course. The placing earned Watson All-American status.
Not far behind him was Zach Calderon (Aquinas), who crossed the line 15th at 20:36.3 to earn All-State honors. His time is the 13th fastest in school history.
Freshman Samuel Chavarria was next to stop the clock, finishing 45th at 21:09.1, with Adam Acuna across in 60th with a time of 21:24.5. Jacob Orta's 68th place finish ended up being the deciding tiebreaking finish for the Wolverines, as he crossed the line at 21:35.1.
Maximiliano Resendis was the sixth SBVC runner across at 21:58.1, finishing 100th in the field of 194 runners. Diego Caldera finished 127th at 22:23.9.
