You'll pardon fans at Tuesday's San Bernardino Valley College baseball game if they were dealing with a sense of deja vu.
After all, the Wolverines jumped out to an early lead Tuesday - same as they had done in their home opener the previous Saturday. And then fans watched as SBVC's opponent - San Diego Mesa on Tuesday - chipped away at that lead and seemed poised to turn the game the other direction.
But Tuesday, the Wolverines held off the rally, as reliever Derik Gerber came in with two on and two out in the sixth and struck out Jacob Campagna to quell a Mesa rally, leading to a six-run bottom half of the inning, helped SBVC to a 14-6 victory.
The game's opening inning also felt a little like deja vu. Mesa opened the game with a single and double to put runners on second and third. A one-out walk loaded the bases for the Olympians, setting up the game's first test for SBVC. But Joseph Anderson tried to lay down a bunt, but popped it up. Pitcher Ryan Contreras grabbed the ball out of the air and threw to third to double up lead-off batter Jacob Lanza to end the threat.
The bottom half of the inning started the same - a leadoff single from Jeremiah Acosta, followed by a double from Adrian Diaz. But No. 3-hitter Cristian Leos was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no one out, and James Henson followed by also getting hit by a pitch to give SBVC the 1-0 lead. Cainon Wrisley followed with a double to right-center to score Diaz and Leos. Will Van Dyke followed with a single to score Henson and Wrisley to give the Wolverines an early 5-0 lead.
The Wolverines tacked on another run in the second, and seemed well on their way until the fourth. Mesa scored twice in the frame, then the teams traded runs in the fifth. In the top of the sixth, the first three Olympians reached against reliever Isaac Gonzalez, which sent coach Jason Kounas to the bullpen for Colton Caldwell. He was greeted with a single to left that scored one, with Finn Royer thrown out at home trying to score from second. But a wild pitch put the other two runners into scoring position, and they scored on a single by Carson-Kai Lewis to make it a one-run game. After getting the second out, Caldwell hit the next batter, giving way to Gerber.
The bottom half of the sixth started auspiciously for SBVC. Henson led off with a single, but was replaced for pinch runner Tyler Crawford - who was thrown out trying to steal second. But Wrisley walked, and pinch-hitter Jadon Mollinedo followed with another walk, with Deaven Mahoney taking his place as a pinch runner. Mesa went to reliever Nate Cena, and he was greeted by a Gama Martinez with a triple to left-center. Miguel Soto reached on an error to put runners on the corners. Then Soto got caught in a run-down while trying to steal, allowing Martinez to steal home to give SBVC a four-run cushion. With two outs, Raymond Ramirez walked and stole second. Then Acosta tripled him home and Diaz lined the ball over the fence in right-field to cap the six-run inning.
From there, Gerber slammed the door. He ended up pitching 2 1/3 innings, allowing no hits and striking out three en route to being awarded the victory.
Wrisley and Martinez each ended the day 3-for-3 with three runs batted in for the Wolverines, while Diaz was 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBI.
