The San Bernardino Valley College baseball team has been getting off to hot starts, then cooling off in later innings this season.
During Thursday's opening game of a three-game series against East Los Angeles College, the Wolverines flipped the script.
SBVC scored five times in its final two at bats to break open a tight contest and beat the Huskies 8-3.
The Wolverines led 3-1 heading into the seventh, after getting 10 hits against ELAC starter Juan Contreras. Reliever Kellen Gewecke came in and was greeted by a two-run line drive blast over the fence by Jeremiah Acosta to make it a 5-1 game.
Gewecke came back for the eighth, and opened the inning by walking James Henson. Tyler Crawford was inserted to run for Henson, and he stole second and went to third on a groundout by Cainon Wrisley. After Gama Martinez was hit by a pitch, Devean Mahoney singled to center to score Crawford and send Martinez to third. Will Van Dyke follwed with a double that score Martinez, and Mahoney scored on a sacrifice fly by Raymond Ramirez to cap the SBVC scoring.
On the mound, Alan Gibbons went five strong for the Wolverines, allowing four hits to get the win. Colton Caldwell pitched a perfect three innings, facing nine batters and striking out three.
Acosta was 3-for-5 with two runs batted in, while Van Dyke was 3-for-4 with two RBIs of his own. Wrisley was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
