Eight-Run Outburst Lifts SBVC over MSJC

For five innings, the San Bernardino Valley College baseball team was using the fundamentals to manufacture runs against visiting Mt. San Jacinto College.

A couple of sacrifice flies, and scoring ground balls had helped the Wolverines build a 5-1 lead after five innings.

But after the Eagles wrestled the lead away in the sixth with a five-run inning, the Wolverines decided to go big to get the lead back.

SBVC scored sent 12 men to the plate, scoring eight times in the seventh, allowing the Wolverines to cruise to a 14-6 win.

With one out in the inning, Gama Martinez opened the rally after being hit by a Tylor Copeland pitch. Sky Donaldson followed with an infield single and Cainon Wrisley singled home Martinez to tie the game. Cristian Leos followed with another single to score Donaldson, ending the afternoon for Copeland.

Ryder DeJournett welcomed reliever Gabriel Brion with another single to score Wrisley. He was followed by Will Van Dyke, who loaded the bases with an off-the-end-of-the-bat infield single. Anthony Casares pinch hit for Raymond Ramirez, and the first pitch he saw hit him to score Leos. Jeremiah Acosta ended Brion's day with a double to center that scored DeJournett and Van Dyke. Adrian Diaz hit the first pitch from reliever Efren Urrea down the left-field line for another double, scoring Casares and Acosta.

That was more than enough for Christofher Melano, who pitched the final four innings for SBVC to pick up the win. He entered the game in the sixth to close down the MSJC rally, and went the rest of the way. He allowed two hits and struck out three in the win.

Acosta finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two runs batted in, while DeJournett was also 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, as SBVC pounded out 17 hits.
