SBVC Claws Out Victory over Coyotes

The San Bernardino Valley College baseball team batted around in the first inning Thursday, scoring four times.

But the Wolverines needed runs in their final two at bats to finish off visiting Compton College on a blistering hot day at SBVC.

Starting at 11 a.m. to avoid some of the heat, the Wolverines started the game hot, with the first five batters reaching safely. Jeremiah Acosta reached on a single deep in the hole at short, then went to second on a wild pitch. Adrian Diaz reached on a fielder's choice as Acosta avoided a tag at third. Gama Martinez followed with a single up the middle to score Acosta, and Cainon Wristley singled to left to score Diaz, with Martinez taking third. Anthony Casares followed with another single to score Martinez to give SBVC a 3-0 lead. James Henson's sacrifice fly would score Wrisley to make it 4-0 as the Wolverines chased Compton starter Delton Prinze II in the first inning.

Reliever Nathaniel Blanco settled things down for the Coyotes, and they scratched their way back with runs in the next three innings to tie the game at 4. Blanco gave up four hits and striking out four over 5 1/3 innings for the Coyotes, keeping Compton in the game.

In the seventh, Compton went to its bullpen again, and the Wolverines were able to take the lead again. Casares was hit by a pitch from Diego Huerta, and one out later, Will Van Dyke drew a walk, ending Huerta's day. Henson greeted Kenny Navarro with a bunt that moved the runners over with two outs, and pinch hitter Sky Donaldson roped a ball into right field to score the two runners to give SBVC a 6-4 lead.

Compton tied the game again in the eighth, but the Wolverines had an answer again. Compton reliever Jesse Ferreira gave up a single to Diaz to lead off the inning and Martinez was hit by a pitch. The two stole second and third, with Wrisley drawing a walk on a full count to load the bases. Justin Bryant took the mound for Compton, and Casares greeted him with a sharp single to center to score Diaz and Martinez. Henson later lifted another sacrifice fly to give SBVC its final run.

Much like Blanco for Compton, Colton Caldwell held things down on the mound for SBVC in the middle innings. The lefty struck out three in 3 1/3 before giving way to Christofher Melano, who picked up the win. Tyler Crawford got the final three outs to pick up his second save.

Casares ended the day 2-for-3 with two runs and three runs batted in. Martinez also was 2-for-3 with two runs, but only one RBI. Henson ended the day with only one official at-bat - a hit - and two RBI.

With the win, SBVC moved within three games of .500 for the season. The Wolverines will resume Inland Empire Athletic Conference play next week with a three-game series against Barstow starting Tuesday.
