For four innings Thursday, the San Bernardino Valley College baseball team could not figure out Victor Valley College pitcher Mark Hyde.
The Wolverines could only muster three hits in the first four innings against the Rams' starter. Then, with two outs in the fifth, everything changed.
The next five SBVC batters reached base, scoring four times to chase Hyde, as the Wolverines turned a 1-0 deficit into a 5-1 lead by the time things were done in the inning. And the Wolverines tacked on another six runs in the seventh as they cruised to an 11-1 victory.
With the win, SBVC moved into third place in the Inland Empire Athletic Conference, a half-game behind Cerro Coso for second, while holding a half-game lead over Mt. San Jacinto in the standings.
The five-run outburst started with a two-out double to the fence in left-center by James Henson. Jeremiah Acosta followed with a walk - the only one allowed by Hyde on the day - and Adrian Diaz sent another ball to left-center for a double that scored Henson and Acosta. A passed ball allowed Diaz to move up 90 feet, and he scored on Gama Martinez's single up the middle. Sky Donaldson followed with another double to score Martinez and end Hyde's day on the mound. Cristian Leos greeted reliever Cristobal Espino with a single, moving Donaldson to third. Cainon Wrisley drove home Donaldson with a single to make it 5-1.
That was more than enough for SBVC and it's pitching staff. After David Kubotsu gave up nine hits and the one run in the first five innings to pick up his first win of the season, a series of five relievers combined to only allow two hits over the final four innings.
SBVC put the game out of reach in the seventh. Instead of waiting for two outs, the Wolverines' first three batters loaded the bases for Ryder DeJournett, who singled home two runs. Deaven Mahoney sacrificed DeJournett and Wrisley into scoring position, before Henson was hit by a pitch to load the bases a second time. Acosta cleared the bases with a line shot into the right-field corner that ended in a triple.
Acosta and Diaz each ended the day with three runs batted in, while Henson ended the day 2-for-2 with a walk, hit by pitch, and two runs scored.
