After a roller coaster ride in its nonconference schedule - going from the lowest of lows to the highest of highs - the San Bernardino Valley College men's basketball team continued its early success in the Inland Empire Athletic Conference, beating Chaffey College 86-70 at home.
After a tight opening 10 minutes, the Wolverines slowly pulled away from the Panthers in the last part of the opening half, thanks in part to trips to the free throw line. SBVC reached the bonus with 8 minutes remaining in the first half, then hit the double bonus less than two minutes later. SBVC was 16-for-18 from the line in the half, compared to Chaffey, which was 2-for-5 in the half.
The second half played out much the same, with the Wolverines able to pull ahead by as many as 29 points with 6:55 remaining. But Chaffey picked up the pressure, and went on a pair of quick runs to cut into SBVC's lead. But the Wolverines pulled themselves together - despite some tempers flaring in the closing minutes - to pick up the victory.
In all, the Wolverines ended up going 26-for-31 from the free throw line in the game, with the Panthers finishing 7-for-11 at the line. SBVC outrebounded the Panthers 44-36.
SBVC's Jaison Joyce led all scorers in the game with 25 points, while also pulling down eight rebounds. Guard Jaden Riley came off the bench to score 14 points while doling out six assists. Stanley Thomas III added 12 points, while Bryan Cabrera had 11 more for the Wolverines.
Chaffey was led by Avery Garcia with 17 points, while Collin Ingram had 14 points and Jonathan Markham had 15 rebounds off the bench.
SBVC will close out the 2025 portion of its schedule at 3 p.m. Saturday against Copper Mountain at home.
