Scoring three times in the opening 11 minutes had the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team looking as if it would cruise to an easy victory over Victor Valley College on Friday afternoon.
But the Rams started the second half with two quick goals of their own, and the Wolverines needed to hang on late to pick up a 4-3 win in SBVC's Inland Empire Athletic Conference finale inside SBVC Stadium.
SBVC opened the scoring in the sixth minute when Eric Ramos sprinted past the Victor Valley defense to take a through pass from Ezequiel Soto. Ramos beat VVC goalkeeper Emmanuel Lopez to the ball and he slotted it into the net for the early lead.
About two minutes later, it was Saul Ruiz on the end of a pass from Soto, and he blasted the ball into the net to double the lead. The Wolverines kept up the pressure, and Josiah Paez took advantage in the 11th minute. The ball was centered into the box and headed down by a Victor Valley defender right into Paez's feet. He simply struck the ball into the net to give SBVC a 3-0 lead it would carry into the break.
But Victor Valley came out with two early goals to start the second half. Daniel Miralda scored in the 48th minute, and then Eric Franco converted from the penalty spot in the 60th minute to make it 3-2.
SBVC seemed to retake control with a Daniel Rodas goal in the 69th minute. But Franco scored less than 20 seconds later to make it 4-3.
The Wolverines dominated much of the play throughout, earning five corners and outshooting the Rams 28-8 in the game. Lopez made three saves for VVC before leaving the game with an injury. His backup, Daniel Hernandez, also made three saves. Matthew Guzman made two saves for SBVC, with Jeffery Loera finishing the game with one save.
SBVC will close out its season with a home game on Nov. 12, making up the game against MiraCosta that had been postponed due to the health concerns caused from the wildfires in Southern California. That game is scheduled to kick off at 6 p.m.
