SBVC Rallies Twice In Home Opener

After opening the season with a pair of wins on the road, the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team kicked off at home for the first time in 2025.

And after falling behind early in each half, the Wolverines' offense picked up the pressure on the San Diego City College defense, scoring in the back end of each half to earn a 2-2 draw Tuesday evening.

The Wolverines found themselves behind in the 19th minute, when Kervens Chery converted a free kick from the top of the penalty box to give the Knights a 1-0 lead. But SBVC got even in the 37th minute on a quick counter-attack. Melvin Curiel fired a shot from about 20 yards out that goalkeeper Riley Anderson dove and parried away with his glove, but Johnny Gonzalez was there to pounce on the loose rebound to tie the game at half.

San Diego City started the second half much as it had done in the first, pushing the pace on the SBVC defense. They took the lead back in the 57th minute when Jamesly Exantus chased down a ball at the end line, and cut a pass back to the center where Chery was able to slot the ball into the net and give the Knights a 2-1 lead.

Again, late in the half, the Wolverines - who outshot the Knights 21-12 in the game - picked up the attack. In the 87th minute, the ball got sent into the Knights' penalty area off a free kick. Victor Gutierrez got his head on the ball in the middle of a pack of people, but his shot bounced off the post. Jayro Dominguez swooped in and knocked home the rebound to tie the game.
