After suffering its first loss of the season last Friday - a game in which they hit several posts and were shutout - the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team wanted to make sure it didn't suffer the same fate in their return home Tuesday night.
The Wolverines scored on their first four shots on goal, taking a 4-0 lead at the half, then held on against a Rio Hondo College team that pushed forward in the second half to pick up a 5-1 victory.
Jayro Dominguez opened the scoring for SBVC in the eighth minute. Dominguez crossed the ball from the left side, where Saul Ruiz settled the ball and sent it back across to Dominguez, who put the ball home for the early lead.
Ruiz continued to drive the SBVC offense in the first half. He sent Sayed Khan on a run with a through ball, and Khan did the rest blasting a shot that goalkeeper Damian Porter could not keep out of the net for a 2-0 lead in the 24th minute. About four minutes later, Ruiz caused a turnover, and broke into the box. After a dummy move, he unselfishly squared the ball to Khan, who had a tap in to make it 3-0.
The third goal chased Porter from the Rio Hondo net. His replacement, Antonio Ortiz-Rayas, got a rude welcome from the Wolverines. The first shot he faced came on a free kick from about 30 yards out that Johnny Gonzalez blasted just under the bar to make it 4-0. It was Gonzalez's fourth goal of the season.
Down a man in the second half due to a red card issued late in the first half, Rio Hondo pushed forward and put pressure on the Wolverines. Ignacio Flores broke through for the Roadrunners in the 70th minute. He blasted a free kick from about 25 yards out to make it 4-1. But Christian Carrasco got the goal back in the 82nd minute, launching a shot into the net from about 38 yards out to put the game to bed.
The Wolverines return home Friday evening, taking on Los Angeles City College at 6 p.m. inside SBVC Stadium.
