Wolverines Pounce to Pick Up Victory

Follow the shot.

It's a common instruction given to players in several sports, including soccer.

Friday night, following a shot turned into the game's only goal as the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team knocked off Los Angeles City College 1-0 inside SBVC Stadium.

In the 84th minute of the scoreless game, SBVC's Johnny Gonzalez fired a low, bouncing shot about 20 yards from goal. LA City goalkeeper Carlos Rodriguez dove to his left to get his hands on the shot. But he was unable to hold onto the ball, and it bounced away from his hands. Julio Calzado followed in, and lifted the loose ball over Rodriguez and into the goal, setting off a large celebration in the corner of the field.

Both teams had chances throughout the game, including each team taking several corner kicks back-to-back in the first half. SBVC had a series of four in a row in the first three minutes of the game. LA City ended the game earning more corners, however, taking 10 to SBVC's 8.

Rodriguez ended the game with five saves, while SBVC's Henzel Solares earned the clean sheet with five saves.
