Given the circumstances of the last week, Tuesday's San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer game had trap written all over it.
After all, the Wolverines suffered a stinging defeat to Oxnard the week before. A loss that they responded to on Friday with a 2-0 victory at El Camino College - a place the host Warriors had not lost a nonconference game at since 2018.
Riding the high of knocking off El Camino, SBVC jumped to No. 5 in the California Community College Sports Information Association's men's soccer poll, which was announced Tuesday morning. With all that, College of Sequoias came to SBVC Stadium with a record of 2-3-4 on the season, with the four draws against quality opponents.
But the Wolverines passed the test Tuesday afternoon, as SBVC knocked off the Giants, 2-0.
After a scoreless first half that the Wolverines dominated, SBVC finally broke through in the 80th minute. The Wolverines were controlling the ball on the right side of the Sequoias' penalty area when Benicio Verduzco fired a shot that was turned away by goalkeeper Angel Nieto. The ball was dug out and sent back to Verduzco, who flipped a pass to the back post where Jayro Dominguez flew in and knocked the ball into the net for the 1-0 lead.
SBVC kept its foot on the gas from there. Just three minutes later, the Wolverines doubled their lead. Luis Erives sent a free kick into the 6-yard box, and Adrian Casillas flicked the ball with his left foot back to the middle where Adrian Ayon slammed the ball home for the 2-0 lead.
Meanwhile, the Wolverines attack dominated much of the play throughout the game. SBVC outshot Sequoias 16-4 in the game, with the Wolverines earning eight corners to only three for the Giants. Henzel Solares only needed to make one save for the clean sheet, while Nieto made eight for Sequoias.
SBVC now has a week off to prepare for the start of Inland Empire Athletic Conference play, opening at 6 p.m. Oct. 7 vs. College of the Desert at Shadow Hills High School in Indio.
