SBVC Holds Off Late Charge from Roadrunners

SBVC Holds Off Late Charge from Roadrunners

Friday afternoon wasn't necessarily a must-win game for the San Bernardino Valley College men's soccer team, but it was pretty close.

Having lost back-to-back games for the first time this season, the Wolverines were looking to right their ship against College of the Desert. And after taking a 2-0 lead in the second half, they were forced to hold on as the Roadrunners sent wave after wave of attack at the SBVC goal. The Wolverines were up to the task, holding on for the 2-0 victory as they started the second half of Inland Empire Athletic Conference play.

SBVC opened the scoring in the 33rd minute. Both teams were battling for the ball about 30 yards from goal, and Christian Carrasco was able to pop the ball free to Nephtali Lopez, who fired it into the top corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.

The Wolverines doubled the lead early in the second. In the 50th minute, Sayed Khan served up a corner kick into the middle of the Desert penalty area, and Adrian Ayon swooped in to head it home for the 2-0 advantage.

But after that, the Roadrunners picked up the pressure, holding possession and firing shots at the SBVC goal. The Roadrunners outshot SBVC 12-6 in the second half, and earned all six of their corner kicks after the Ayon goal. But starting goalkeeper Joshua Cerezo made three of his five saves in the second half before being relieved for the final eight-plus minutes by Henzel Solares, who made two saves.

SBVC will have a week to prepare for its next action, as the Wolverines will go through the Cajon Pass to take on Victor Valley at 6 p.m. on Halloween.
