Members of the San Bernardino Valley College track and field team headed to South Orange County on Valentine's Day to get their first competitive action of the season.
And for some of the squad, the early season meet showed that this season may see more success for the team.
The team participated at the Soka University Indoor Qualifying Meet in Aliso Viejo. The team representing SBVC mostly consisted of the sprinters and medium-distance crew.
Starting off strong for the Wolverines was jumper Tamia Hardwick. A volleyball player in the fall, Hardwick posted top-five finishes in her three events. She finished third in the field in the long jump, posting a jump of 5.07 meters (16 feet, 7.75 inches) on her fourth and final attempt to finish in the top three. In the triple jump, she was fifth with a best jump of 10.87 meters (35 feet, 8 inches). And in the high jump, she was fourth, clearing 1.5 meters.
On the men's side, Luis Muniz had a strong afternoon. He finished ninth overall (out of 66 competitors) in the 60 meters, winning his heat with a time of 7.07 seconds. Running in the 200 meters, Muniz once again won his heat (with a time of 22.58 seconds), this time finishing fifth overall in the field of 44 runners.
Other notable performances included Trevor McSween, who finished 13th in the men's long jump with a mark of 5.94 meters (19 feet, 6 inches); Wahi Traylor, who finished 21st in the 600 meters with a time of 1:32.31; and Makala Traylor and Mia Gonzalez, who finished fifth and sixth respectively in the 60-meter hurdles in times of 9.78 seconds and 9.84 seconds.
