At this point in a track and field season, runners are just starting to look for ways to build up their strengths to compete for championships later in the season.
But posting good times in February isn't bad, either.
The entire SBVC track and field teams gathered at Mt. San Antonio College on Feb. 21 for the Ron Kamaka Open, and some athletes already began laying down some strong times.
Savannah Flores put her name into SBVC record books at the event, finishing the 1,500 meters in 5 minutes, 0.45 seconds, which is the fourth fastest time in school history. In the 3,000 meters - a distance run early in the season, but not at championships - she posted the second fastest time in school history finishing 11th overall with a time of 10:46.14.
Fellow distance runner Callie Frias also posted personal bests in both events, finishing the 1,500 at 5:15.8 and the 3,000 at 11:18.89, leaving her room to build for the future.
Jumper Tamia Hardwick continued her early season success as well. She finished fifth in the triple jump with a distance of 34 feet, 11.25 inches (10.65 meters), 10th in the long jump with a jump of 16 feet, 3.75 inches, and sixth in the high jump, clearing 4 feet, 9 inches (1.45 meters).
On the men's side, Oscar Hernandez posted the second-fastest time in the state so far this season in the 800 meters, finishing third in the field with a time of 1:56.52.
In the 3,000 meters, Micah Watson and Samuel Chavarria each finished in the top third of the crowded field at the distance. Watson finished 20th at 8:53.04 (No. 9 time in So Cal so far this season), and Chavarria at 26th with a time of 8:57.67.
