Nine members of the San Bernardino Valley College track and field team will keep running this season - and two are already set to participate in the 3C2A State Championships - based on their results at the Southern California Preliminaries, held May 2 at Bakersfield College.
Distance runners Zach Calderon and Savannah Flores each earned their way into the State Championships with their results in the 10,000 meters - one of the only events to contest its finals during the meet. It will be the second consecutive year for Calderon heading to the state championships in the event, after he finished Saturday's race in fourth with a time of 32 minutes, 20.02 seconds. Flores, a freshman, advanced to her first state meet, finishing sixth with a time of 40:49.62. Both will run in this Saturday's 5,000 meters finals as well, hoping to qualify for two events at the State Finals.
Three members of the men's team clinched a spot in the 3,000-meter steeplechase final, with a fourth set as an alternate should another runner drop out. Micah Watson won his heat with a time of 9:52.50, good for the fourth-fastest time in the field. Teammate Samuel Chavarria also qualified from the first heat, posting a time of 10:15.45. Running in the second heat, Noah Townsend posted a personal best time of 10:01.87 to earn his spot in the finals. Running in Heat 1, Adam Acuna earned the alternate spot with a personal best time of 10:17.49 - just one second behind the final guaranteed spot.
Callie Frias will have a busy afternoon on the track at the regional finals. She is set to run in two events - both of which didn't have preliminaries - the women's 5,000 meters and the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
The runners will be joined by two jumpers at the regional finals. Jordan Carter finished seventh in the triple jump at the preliminaries, posting a personal best leap of 47 feet, 1 inch (14.35 meters). Tamia Hardwick will participate in two finals, as she finished second in the long jump at 18 feet, 6.5 inches, and qualified in the triple jump with a leap of 35 feet, 9.5 inches, good for 11th.
The Regional Finals will take place May 9 at Bakersfield College, with the state championships set for May 15-16 at Mt. San Antonio College.
