Members of San Bernardino Valley College's track and field teams finished their seasons during the 3C2A Championships at Mt. San Antonio College May 15-16 with solid year-ending performances.
The top finisher for SBVC was Micah Watston in the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Saturday. The freshman from Fontana High School finished third in the event in one of the tightest finishes of the weekend. It was a three-man race down the stretch following the final water jump, with Southern California champion Juan Flores of Cerritos College holding off a late challenge from Northern California champion Davis Bosch of Clovis College and Watson to take the title. At the finish, there was only 0.75 seconds separating the three runners, as Bosch edged out Watson by 0.14 seconds at the finish, with Watson crossing the line at 9 minutes, 20.01 seconds.
Freshman Callie Frias represented SBVC in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. She stumbled over a barricade during her run, as she finished 10th with a time of 12:26.44.
The action for SBVC opened Friday with a pair of runners in the 10,000 meters.
Savannah Flores became the first female in SBVC to turn in a sub-40 minute time in the 10,000, as she finished sixth with a time of 39:14.25. In his second trip to the state finals, sophomore Zach Calderon finished eighth in the 10K with a time of 32:50.03.
SBVC had two athletes participate in field events on Saturday, as well.
Freshman Tamia Hardwick finished her season with a fifth-place finish in the long jump, turning in a top mark of 18 feet, 3 inches. In the men's triple jump, Jordan Carter turned in a leap of 46 feet, 8 inches to finish in eighth place.
