Saturday's race at Cal State San Marcos was supposed to be a chance for the San Bernardino Valley College cross country teams to stretch their legs going into a long stretch off.

But with the rescheduled Southern California Preview race approaching this weekend, the 8-kilometer men's race and 6-kilometer women's race turned out to be a lengthy tune up for an important race on the schedule.

The men's team fared well at the event - their first 8K of the season - finishing eighth in the field, one point behind Division 1 University of Texas-San Antonio. Sophomore Vinnie Quiroz continued his strong season, crossing the line first for SBVC in a time of 25 minutes, 40.7 seconds, good for 42nd in the field of 155 runners. Teammates Kevin Nava (25:59.3) and Elijah McBroom (26:03.8) finished at 61st and 63rd, respectively, to help SBVC in the scoring race.

Freshmen Nick Juarez and Zach Calderon reached the finish line together, with Juarez clocking in at 26:49.5, and Calderon finishing a 26:49.7. Armando Nunez (27:10.0) and Xander Merkwan (27:29.2) rounded out the SBVC runners.

Sara Jaquez, the only member of the SBVC women's team to run in the race, finished 44th overall (in a field of 157) with a time of 23:00.5. It was the fourth best finish of a CCCAA runner in the field.
