SBVC Walks Off With Victory over Roadrunners

Three hits usually aren't enough to win a softball game.

But Monday afternoon, the San Bernardino Valley College softball team made the most of their three hits - including a walk-off single - to beat Rio Hondo College 8-7 in a nonconference game.

While the Wolverines only had three hits, they drew 10 walks and had two other batters reach after being hit by a pitch from Rio Hondo's Delilah Perez - the second hit batter ended up spurring the winning rally.

Tied at 7 in the bottom of the seventh, Julissa Alford was hit by the first pitch of her at bat to lead off the inning. She promptly stole second, and was still there when Stephanie Varela drew a walk. Kristina Sandoval came up next, and with a 3-0 count, she belted a ball that went to the fence in left field to easily score Alford and win the game.

The game-winning hit capped off a strong game from Sandoval, who had two of the Wolverines' hits in the game, and four runs batted in. She also started the game in the circle, striking out four over the first six innings before giving way to Kaydance Hjelm for the seventh inning. Hjelm pitched a scoreless frame to pick up the victory.

Before the late-game heroics, SBVC took advantage of what they were given by the Roadrunners. Seven of the eight runs the Wolverines scored were unearned, as Rio Hondo committed four errors.

But the Roadrunners stayed in the game thanks to 12 hits against Sandoval. A five-run sixth inning, capped off by an inside-the-park grand slam from Gisslle Ramirez-Huerta, tied the game.

For SBVC, Alford recorded no at-bats - walking three times to go with the hit by a pitch - while scoring three times. Varela picked up four walks in the game, also with no official at-bats. SBVC's other hit was a fourth-inning double from Alani Lopez.
