SBVC Settles For Draw In Home Opener

A good bounce in soccer can end up being the difference in the game.

Tuesday afternoon, the San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team got a good bounce - and a bad one - leading the Wolverines to have to settle for a 1-1 draw against visiting San Diego Miramar College.

SBVC took the lead in the eighth minute thanks to a couple of large bounces. Desiree Aguilar sent a long ball from midfield toward the Miramar goal, where Anna Bailey raced past her defender, and held her off as the ball bounced twice over their heads. Bailey controlled the ball and fired it past Miramar goalkeeper Sydney Puga to give the Wolverines the lead.

Despite the early advantage, and controlling much of the play early on, SBVC was unable to build upon its lead. The second half featured more of the same back-and-forth play until the bounce didn't go the Wolverines' way.

In the 51st minute, SBVC was resetting on defense when a pass was sent from the left side to goalkeeper Bella Silva. She turned to make a pass to a teammate on the opposite side of the field. Silva didn't get enough on her pass, and the ball ended up at the feet of Miramar's Giselle Lopez, who had an easy look at the vacated net to make it 1-1.

SBVC pushed for a go-ahead goal, but was unable to crack the Jets' defense. Despite forcing Puga to make five saves - to none for Silva - in the second half, the Wolverines were not able to get a strong chance at the goal. Even playing up a player after Lopez was sent off for a hard foul in the 61st minute, the Wolverines were unable to find the goal.

The Wolverines will play at home again Friday afternoon, taking on East Los Angeles on the soccer field. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
