SBVC Unable to Rally Against Canyons

San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer coach Jenna Lefay would probably like the first 20 minutes of Tuesday's game back.

In that time period, College of the Canyons scored twice for a 2-0 lead it would not lose, as the Cougars defeated SBVC on a warm mid-afternoon.

Canyons opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Bailey Williamson touched a pass through two defenders to an on-running Leila Sadra, who touched the ball to the left and slotted it past SBVC goalkeeper Bella Silva for the early 1-0 lead.

In the 19th minute, the Cougars struck again. This time, Williamson had the ball down the right side, and as she moved to the middle, she squared the ball to Lili Golphenee for the 2-0 lead.

But after that, the Wolverines picked up the play. They held Canyons out of their zone the rest of the way, only allowing four shots in the second half - only one on goal. Canyons only had eight shots in the game, with Silva making one save.

On the other end, Melanie Bravo had SBVC's best chance to break the shutout in the second half. She fired on goal from the top of the box, and Canyons's goalkeeper Rebecca Ferguson went down to make the save. But she couldn't control the ball, and Bravo got a second chance, but Ferguson smothered the second shot to preserve the clean sheet. Ferguson had seven saves.

SBVC plays its last nonconference game before starting Inland Empire Athletic Conference play on Sept. 23 this Friday, Sept. 19, taking on Citrus inside SBVC Stadium at 6 p.m.
