For 41 minutes Friday afternoon, the San Bernardino Valley College women's soccer team was dominating play against Victor Valley College, but wasn't finding the right spark.
In the 42nd minute, they found it.
The Wolverines scored twice in the final minutes of the first half, and made those two goals stand up as they defeated the Rams 2-1 in an Inland Empire Athletic Conference game.
SBVC earned its fourth corner kick of the first half in the 42nd minute, and Arleth Torres stepped to the ball. She sent the ball across the front of the net where Anna Bailey headed the ball home to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead. It was Bailey's 10th goal of the season.
The goal fired up the Wolverines. Bailey followed up with another shot that Victor Valley goalkeeper Sarah Fort turned away. Then, in the first minute of stoppage time, Bailey sprung Sienna Villalobos with a through ball up the middle, and Villalobos fired a shot home to give SBVC a 2-0 lead at the break.
Victor Valley came out in the second half putting pressure on the Wolverines' defense. In the 47th minute, the Rams earned a corner kick, and Aramari Gonzalez sent the ball into the box. SBVC goalkeeper Bella Silva came out to knock the ball away, but a scramble ensued. It appeared Silva had gather the ball in, but the ball was poked loose and Haley Pratt was able to knock the ball into the net to cut the lead in half.
The Rams had one more solid chance. Gonzalez had a clear look on the right side from about 16 yards out, but Silva was able to parry the ball away and out to preserve the lead. Silva ended the game with three saves, while Fort made nine on the other end for Victor Valley. SBVC outshot Victor Valley 23-5 for the game.
SBVC returns to action on Oct. 10, as they will host Norco College at 4 p.m. on the soccer field.
