SBVC Pressure Offense Earns Draw

No man's land - that's what the area around the edge of the penalty area is for soccer goalkeepers. You might not be able to handle the ball safely, and unless you're certain you're going to get the ball, you're leaving your goal wide open with opponents and your teammates running at you.

Wednesday afternoon, the goalkeepers in the matchup between San Bernardino Valley and College of the Desert's women's teams found themselves in that danger zone.

And both times, the ball ended up inside their net, leading the game to end in a 1-1 draw on the soccer field at SBVC.

Desert opened the scoring in the fourth minute, the Roadrunners sent an innocent-looking long ball toward the SBVC penalty area. But it didn't have enough power to make it into the penalty area for goalkeeper Bella Silva to pick it up. Silva ran outside her area and tried to clear the ball away, but the ball rebounded off her own defenders and Desert's Willow Jones back into the penalty area. Jones chased down the loose ball and tucked it into the net to give the Roadrunners a 1-0 lead.

The Wolverines took over the game after that, outshooting the Roadrunners 9-6 in the first half, forcing Desert goalkeeper Alejandra Carillo to make five saves.

SBVC continued to pour it on in the second half. And they got an extra boost when Jones was sent off for foul language dissent, giving the Wolverines a man advantage. But Carillo continued to be up to the task - until the 67th minute.

At that point, central defender Desiree Aguilar sent a long ball from her half of the field toward the Desert goal - in almost the exact same spot where Silva ran into trouble in the first half. Carillo and Dianna Calleja reached the ball at the same time, and Calleja won the joust. She knocked the ball loose and was able to tuck it in to the net to tie the game.

In all, the Wolverines outshot Desert 21-8 for the game, with Carillo picking up nine saves. Silva ended the game with two saves for the Wolverines.
