After an opening match full of inconsistencies, the San Bernardino Valley College women's volleyball team looked to get back on track Wednesday evening against Southwestern College.
And while there are things that coach Robert Vansant would like to see cleaned up still, the Wolverines swept the Jaguars in a nonconference showdown, 25-20, 25-15, 25-20.
SBVC took over midway through the first set, as libero Ava Avila went on a four-point run from the service line, giving SBVC a 17-13 lead by the time she was done.
The Wolverines cruised through the second set, converting on 12 of their 25 attacks. Emersyn Ebel, who finished the match with four aces, was at the service line for eight of SBVC's points in the set, as it finished 25-15.
In the third set, the Wolverines once again battled inconsistency, as Southwestern fought to keep the match alive. But SBVC overcame some early struggles in the set to close out the match.
Cielo Rodriguez led SBVC, converting 11 of her 26 attacks in the game, while Devi'arre Lucas had 10 kills in 26 attempts. Ebel and Venus Bush split the setting duties, as they finished with 14 and 19 assists, respectively. Avila led the team with 10 digs, while Lucas added another nine.
SBVC now embarks on a series of road games, playing its next five games away from home. The Wolverines' only appearance at home in September will be Sept. 17 against Rio Hondo College.
