Due to a series of changes after their schedule was completed, the San Bernardino Valley College women's volleyball team had only played twice over the past two weeks going into Wednesday's game against Victor Valley College.
So, when the Wolverines had troubles out of the gate, you could see them working to shake the rust off.
But shake it off they did, as the Wolverines swept the Rams 25-17, 25-11, 25-21.
victor Valley opened an 8-5 lead early in the first set, only to see SBVC turn things on as the teams returned to their opening rotations. Cielo Rodriguez took over at the service line for SBVC, and the Wolverines turned a 9-7 deficit into a 14-9 advantage as the SBVC defense and attack put pressure on the Rams. On their next service, Ava Avila served the Wolverines for another three-point run to take control of the opening game.
In the second, the Wolverines were firing on all cylinders. They connected on 31 percent of their attacks to easily take the second set.
But in the third, the inconsistent play came back for SBVC. Victor Valley took the game's first five points, and held that lead by as many as six at one point early. But the Wolverines settled down their defense, and came back attacking. SBVC converted on 13 of their 29 attacks with one error (41.4 percent) in the final set to complete the win.
SBVC was paced by Devi'arre Lucas, who led the team with 15 kills and 14 digs in the game. Tamia Hardwick converted 11 of her 22 attack attempts - 45.5 percent - to help the Wolverines remain unbeaten in Inland Empire Athletic Conference play. Emersyn Ebel passed out 30 assists and Destiny Allen had a hand in five blocks - two solo and three assisted.
The Wolverines return to action at 5 p.m. Friday against Cerro Coso in the auxilary gym.
