When the San Bernardino Valley College women's volleyball team opened Saturday's opening round game of the California Community College Athletic Association regional playoffs on a 6-0 run, the auxiliary gym was rocking from fans excited at the prospect of a quick night.
Two hours later, the gym was rocking again, as the Wolverines swept through the final two sets to beat College of the Canyons 19-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-12, 15-7.
After starting out with that 6-0 lead, the Wolverines gave up the next six points to the Cougars, setting the tone for the opening two sets. The Wolverines struggled attacking in the first, making nine hitting errors in the set. But they turned it around in the second, racking up 13 kills to tie the match.
In the third, the Wolverines fell behind early 7-1, then were down 19-13 when coach Robert Vansant took his second timeout. That helped SBVC settle itself, and a late rally before falling set the tone for the Wolverines' comeback.
SBVC opened on a 5-0 run, then opened up a 14-5 lead through five service rotations. The Wolverines converted 12 of its 27 attacks - with only two errors - the set, as it cruised to the 25-12 set win, setting up the deciding set.
The Wolverines opened the fifth with first serve, and opened a quick 3-0 lead, but Canyons rallied back to a 6-5 defecit. The Wolverines won the next three points from there to take control, with Cielo Rodriguez at the service line for the final three points for the Wolverines to advance.
Devi'arre Lucas led the SBVC attack with 17 kills, 14 digs, and three aces. Rodriguez came up big in the later sets, with 11 kills and three aces, while Tamia Hardwick adding 13 kills for the Wolverines. Setter Venus Bush had 22 assists, while fellow setter Emersyn Ebel had 18 assists and 22 digs. Libero Ava Avila led the team with 24 digs.
SBVC advances to Tuesday's second round against top-seeded San Diego Mesa. That game will begin at 6 p.m.
