The San Bernardino Valley College women's basketball team has had troubles at times this season finding its footing in games.

But for one quarter on Wednesday night against Chaffey College, the Wolverines looked like a team that could challenge others in the Inland Empire Athletic Conference.

After a shaky first half, the Wolverines came out in the third quarter and traded blows with the Panthers, before closing the quarter out on a 12-3 run over the last four minutes, bringing the score to 53-38 with 10 minutes left to play.

But the fourth quarter was another story. The Chaffey defense picked up the pace, shutting out the Wolverines in the final period, as the Panthers finished with a 76-38 victory.

Sophomore Destiny Melendez led the way for the Wolverines, scoring a game-high 15 points - putting her above the 500-point plateau for her SBVC career - to go with six steals, five rebounds and three assists.

Chaffey center Abby Hardy led the Panthers with 15 points - despite not playing much of the second half - while Venezia Perez and Cali Azcuenaga each had 12 points.

The Wolverines continue conference play Saturday at home against Copper Mountain. The game is set to tip-off at 1 p.m.
