A final check of the box score for San Bernardino Valley College's loss to Mt. San Jacinto College in women's basketball will say the Wolverines lost by 40 points.
But that won't tell the entire story of Wednesday's game.
The Wolverines played the Eagles tough during the middle two quarters, and then ran out of steam at the end with a pair of players on the bench having fouled out in the 103-63 defeat.
The Wolverines trailed by 17 after the first quarter against the No. 13-ranked Eagles, as Mt. San Jacinto hit 58.3 percent of its shots in the opening 10 minutes. But the second quarter was another story, as the Wolverines' defense swarmed the Eagles, holding the visitors to only 36.4 percent from the field in the quarter, as the teams each scored 19 points in the period, keeping the SBVC deficit to 17.
But foul trouble caught up with the Wolverines in the third quarter. Hailey Ruiz picked up a pair of fouls 20 seconds apart early in the quarter, then fouled out with 1:59 remaining in the third quarter. Destiny Cade spent much of the first half on the bench with two early fouls, then she fouled out with 5:32 to go in the game as the Eagles pulled away. Despite that, the Wolverines held MSJC to only 46.4 percent shooting for the game.
The Wolverines got another strong performance from Destiny Melendez, who posted a double-double in her 40 minutes of play, scoring a team-high 24 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Maryanne Palacios added 21 points to go with seven rebounds and seven assists.
Mt. San Jacinto's Kohen Marshall led all scorers with 30 points off the bench, with Karshen Marshall adding 25 - also off the bench.
