The sophomores on the San Bernardino Valley College women's basketball team were adamant that they wanted to go out with a bang.

And they followed through on that desire, as the Wolverines never took their foot off the gas to rout Palo Verde College 112-60 in the season finale for both teams.

But the biggest bang of the night came from Destiny Melendez. The sophomore from Rialto's W.A. Carter High set a new school standard for points scored in a single game with 48 for the game, surpassing the previous high of 42 which was set by Danielle Jones in 2001.

Melendez did most of her damage in the second half against the Pirates, who only had six players suit up for the season's final game. Melendez scored 29 of her 48 in the final 20 minutes, including 17 in the fourth quarter. She finished the game with a triple-double, pulling down 13 rebounds and accounting for 10 steals in the game. The sophomore concluded the season with 561 points - the fourth-most in a single season in school history. She earned second-team all-Inland Empire Athletic Conference honors for her efforts.

But Melendez didn't do it herself. Fellow sophomore Maryanne Palacios closed out her career with a double-double for the Wolverines, scoring 26 points with 10 assists to go with eight rebounds.

Meanwhile, a pair of freshmen made sure the sophomores finished out victorious. Majesty Cade had 23 points - including 6 of 10 from 3-point range - for the Wolverines, while Hailey Ruiz came off the bench with a double-double of her own, scoring 11 points and pulling down 10 rebounds.
